Surfrider's First Annual "Martinis & Bikinis" Raises Over $14,000 to Preserve Gaviota Coast

Super Buddha donated apparel for the silent auction and rocked the catwalk.

On January 12th, warm Santa Ana winds greeted over 300 people who came out in support of the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation's efforts to save the Gaviota coast, at the First Annual "Martinis and Bikinis," a new year's celebration of fashion and fun.

Held at The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, it was a closing reception for the "Glass Love: Contemporary Art and Surf" exhibit, which the chapter co-sponsored.

Local surf shops and community designers Feisty Swimwear, The Beach House, Truman & Grace, The Bikini Factory, Asha Couture, Deckers, Happy Endings Apparel, Low Tide Rising Apparel, Super Buddha Clothing, Surf Country, J7 Surf, and Solitude (owned by 1977 World Champion surfer and Montecito resident Shaun Tomson, who was on hand with his wife Carla) highlighted their 2008 men & women's swimwear and surfwear clothing lines, with local models styled by Salon U, who donated their services to do hair and make-up for 18 models! They didn't stop there, as salon owner Joel Patrick DJed the fashion show and party following a tight set of instrumental surf music by local band, "Kelp."

Food donated by Louie's California Bistro, The Sojourner Cafe, Aldo's Italian Restaurant and Quantum Kitchen & Cocktails, Duo Catering and Events, Village Modern Foods, and Trader Joe's complimented a p.i.n.k. Vodka Martini bar that featured special mixed drinks ("The Red Tide Pomegranate Martini," "The Gaviota Grapefruit Martini" and "The SB Surfrider Classic Martini") for the event created by bartenders graciously supplied by Milk & Honey Restaurant. A variety of Twin Fin Wines, New Belgium Brewing Company beers, Babycham and Matilija Water added to the night's festivities.

A raffle featuring a "Fat Tire" cruiser donated by New Belgium and a silent auction including donations of a Jason Kline Third World surfboard, an autographed ukulele from Jack Johnson, donations from The Four Seasons Biltmore, The Upham Hotel, OS3 Skateboards, Sustainable Vine, Oniric Records, Low Tide Rising Apparel, The SB Museum of Natural History, Zog's, Asha Couture. Chocolate Maya, Super Buddha Clothing, Caribbean Coffee, Embe Fashion, Tikiwaxx, The Church of Skatan, Deckers Outdoor, TEVA, Aldo's Italian Restaurant, as well as artwork and prints by Hank Pitcher, Amy Bird, Mike Ackerman and renowned surf photographers Dan Merkel and Branden Aroyan gave the crowd ample opportunities to support the chapter.

The event raised much needed funds to protect coastal resources threatened by development - specifically at the Santa Barbara Ranch which proposes building up to 75 mega-mansions, plus guest houses and out buildings (many on coastal bluff tops), in the "Naples" area north of Goleta. The SB chapter of the Surfrider Foundation continues to challenge inappropriate development along the Gaviota coast, ensuring preservation of the rural character of our coast from urban sprawl. "Martinis & Bikinis" was an amazing success, raising over $14,000 and increasing the community's awareness of pending development on the Gaviota coast. Chapter Chair Scott Bull and tireless volunteers are already planning next year's event!

Santa Barbara Independent 'Style Phile'

BE THE BUDDHA
by Shannon Kelly Gould

A little over a year ago, designer/surfer/yogi Tom Mattson, who'd just returned from a trip through South America, dreamed up an idea with his pal Trenten Clark, who'd returned from an extended trip around Nepal and India. Wouldn't it be cool, they thought, "if we were doing our own thing to create a corporate culture that we define and to get more involved with things that we're passionate about?". Cool Indeed. They put their heads and respective experience together, and Super Buddha, a fair-trade, sweatshop-free, globally influenced clothing line that uses organic fabrics and promotes "positive propaganda" is the result. Mattson, who'd worked as an apparel designer, art director, designer, and producer for everyone from Barry Manilow to the Surfrider Foundation, wasn't hurting for experience, and the Super Buddha collection proves it. The duds are made from 100 percent combed ring-spun cotton to offer a better look, feel and fit. The Eastern-inspired, silk-screened designs ooze a message of cool consciousness that doesn't take itself too seriously. ("It's a global design collective, everyone together ... so Super Buddha is kind of like the superego, but better for the global conciseness," Mattson said.) From the get go, Super Buddha opted to join One Percent for the Planet, a global alliance of companies that donate one percent of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide. And even though they've already outgrown their Santa Barbara silk-screening studio, Mattson and Clark opted keep the production they've had to start outsourcing local. Their line has been picked up by several stores nationwide; in Santa Barbara, look for Super Buddha at Arcobaleno Trade and Bikram Yoga, or check out their Web site, superbuddha.net.
